Learn the Three Types of ADHD

For years, children have been diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD). In recent years, however, the term ADD has been deemed outdated, and scientists now prefer the diagnosis attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

While the name encompasses a lot of symptoms, every child is different and is typically sorted into one of three categories. Learn about the three types of ADHD, how to test for the disorder, and ways children may act based upon the various categories.

Primarily Inattentive

The typical associations with the use of ADD refer to attention issues. When a child is primarily inattentive, they easily lose focus and fail to properly complete tasks. For example, when given a list of instructions, a child with primarily inattentive ADHD may not absorb them, even if the instructions were presented directly to them.

The child may struggle even more when given verbal instructions. As a child's caregiver, you may find you need to repeat instructions or use alternative ways to teach the child step-by-step directions. Other signs that your child may have primarily inattentive ADHD would be if they often lose items or forget where items were placed.

Through surveys and observation, a counselor will diagnose and determine the signs of primarily inattentive ADHD. A teacher will also help give insight on how a child performs during school and if any patterns appear.

Primarily Hyperactive

The H in ADHD stands for hyperactive and is often mixed with diagnoses for children who are inattentive. Hyperactivity includes a wide range of functions, including acting on impulse. Children who are hyperactive could make decisions without any rhyme or reason, or without processing the possible consequences of the actions.

The classroom often exacerbates a lot of hyperactivity symptoms. For example, children who are primarily hyperactive may rise up out of their seats more, become easily restless, or unintentionally break some of the classroom rules. They may also speak excessively.

You may notice little signs. For example, a hyperactive child could often fidget in their seats and may establish habits to help contain their hyperactivity. Possible actions include chewing objects like pen caps, pulling on strings, or tapping fingers and hands.

Through therapy sessions, a counselor will recognize habits in children. While some children could have hyper days, counselors will seek out patterns in the child to determine an exact diagnosis. Parents, caregivers, and teachers can also use various surveys to determine levels of hyperactivity.

Combined

Lines often blur when comparing the primarily hyperactive and primarily inattentive children. While a little overlap is expected, signs of both could lead to a combined diagnosis of both hyperactive and inattentive ADHD.

With a combined diagnosis, children may struggle in multiple areas of their life, including both school and home. Coming up with a combined diagnosis may involve all the surveys and tests used to diagnosis other versions of ADHD. When severe symptoms present themselves in a clear case of combined ADHD, a counselor may seek out special treatments.

For example, a child may have sessions multiple times a week, and you may consider medication as a treatment. The American Psychiatric Association describes personality disorders as having a way of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differs from cultural norms. When a person has a personality disorder it greatly inhibits their ability to function. When personality disorders aren't treated, they can last for a lifetime.

There are ten types of personality disorders. These 10 disorders are categorized into different clusters, including A, B, and C. Cluster A personality disorders include those that are characterized by odd or eccentric behavior.

Following is a brief guide to Cluster A personality disorders.

Paranoid Personality Disorder

People with paranoid personality disorders have a deep mistrust of others. This distrust most likely began by early adulthood. People with paranoid personality disorder often suspect that others are deceiving them.

When someone makes a kind or gracious remark to them, they think there is a hidden meaning behind it. For these reasons, they have a hard time confiding in others, which prevents them from getting close to other people.

Other traits of paranoid personality disorder include:

They suspect others of being disloyal even when there are inadequate reasons for their suspicions.
They tend to be unforgiving toward others.
They have unjustified fears that their spouse is cheating on them.
They fear that people are going to manipulate or take advantage of them.

Because of these traits, people with paranoid personality disorder withdraw from others. They also have difficulty expressing emotion.

Schizoid Personality Disorder

People with schizoid personality disorders have a pattern of detaching from social relationships. They are often considered loners and usually prefer activities they can do on their own. As professionals, they typically work better on their own. People with schizoid personality disorder also have a narrow range of emotional expressions.

Other traits of schizoid personality disorder include:

They don't seek or want close friendships or relationships.
They have a hard time feeling pleasure from anything.
They have a hard time acting appropriately in emotional situations.
They have little or no desire for sexual intimacy.

One more trait of those with schizoid personality disorder is that they are typically unconcerned with getting praise or criticism from others.

Schizotypal Personality Disorder

People with schizotypal personality disorder are usually described as having odd personalities. Along with eccentric behaviors, those with schizotypal personality disorder experience cognitive and perceptual distortions that might make them be overly superstitious or have strange ideas.

In some cases, people with this personality disorder are so suspicious that it impedes their ability to function in relationships and in society. They usually have extreme social anxiety and are uncomfortable in close relationships.

Other traits of schizotypal personality disorder include:

They have a peculiar way of dressing.
They believe they have supernatural powers and can influence others with their thoughts.
They experience unusual sensations or hear voices in their head.
They have an indifferent or suspicious response to others.

Schizotypal personality disorder is not the same as schizophrenia. Although the two disorders are easily confused with one another, schizophrenia is not a personality disorder. While a person with schizotypal personality disorder can become aware of their distorted ideas, those with schizophrenia cannot tell the difference between their delusions and reality.

The good news about Cluster A personality disorders is that they are highly treatable. Some treatment options for these personality disorders include psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. 4 Do's and Don'ts to Help Your Grieving Child

If your child is experiencing sorrow over a personal loss, the grief may disrupt his or her life. Grief is often difficult for a child to handle, and it may manifest as health problems, both emotionally and physically. There are ways you can help your child over this difficult time. Consider the following do's and don'ts to help your grieving child.

1. DO Recognize the Signs of Grief in a Child

Young child often have trouble expressing emotions such as profound grief. Some children hide their feelings of grief until it manifests into outward signs of anger, rebellion or withdrawal. Before you can help your child over this time, you must recognize the signs of grief. Here is what to look for.

Difficulty Concentrating: Whether it is at school or at home, some grieving children can't keep a level of concentration. He or she may seem distracted when studying or listening. The child may seem to display a faraway look or cannot stick to one task for a long period of time.Maybe he or she does not finish his assignments or chores. Schoolwork may begin to suffer with falling grades.
Aggressive, Angry or Defiant Behavior: Has your child been having disciplinary issues of late? Acting up at home or school or picking fights with others could be another sign of grief in a child. 
Nightmares or an Inability to Sleep: If your child has begun to have sleep disturbances, bad dreams or simply cannot sleep through the night, grief may be the reason why. Some younger children or toddlers may insist on sleeping in their parents' bed, in order to be close to Mommy and Daddy.

Any of the above could indicate grief in a child. If you note these changes in your child, it may be time to intervene.

2. DON'T Cover Up the Truth

Fibbing to a child about the death of a loved one might make matters worse. Don't tell the child the deceased has simply gone away. It is important for the child to have closure and realize the person (or beloved pet) is not coming back. Try to be as honest as possible about the loss.

While you don't need to provide explicit details about death, you should try to make the child understand that it is permanent. It may help if you read books together about loss and the grieving process.

3. DO Encourage Your Child to Open Up and Talk 

If your older child is able to understand the reality of death and is experiencing sadness or depression, it may help if he or she talks about their feelings. Sit your child down and try to encourage the child to discuss his or her feelings. Sometimes all that is needed is a sympathetic ear and a need to vent out frustration, anger or sadness.

Keeping emotions bottled up may make matters worse in the long run. Let your child know you are there for him or her and will listen without passing judgment, if and when they are ready to discuss their feelings. In addition, speak to your child about your own feelings on the subject.

4. DON'T Dismiss or Downplay Your Child's Feelings
