Heritage Mental Health Clinic is excited to announce the start of a Mental Health Training Program. The Training Program is made up of a clinical and didactic component. Heritage currently has two practicum students, a master’s social work student from Washburn University, located in Topeka, Kansas and a psychology doctoral student from University of Kansas. The trainees work with adult and child clients and receive intensive supervision by experienced Heritage clinical staff.
In addition to diverse clinical work, the students attend a weekly training seminar taught by Heritage staff psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers as well as other Topeka mental health clinicians. Topic areas include the adult and child diagnostic interviewing, introduction to cognitive behavior therapy, marital/family therapy, play therapy, and case conceptualization. The didactic portion of the training is designed to help students integrate psychological theory with clinical work.
We are pleased to offer these classes to other mental health trainees from community agencies including Florence Crittenton, Stormont Vail West, and Family Service & Guidance Center.
We believe that our students, upon completion of the training program, should be able to critically observe and apply relevant psychological theory to a diverse group of clinical groups and tailor their treatment approach and interventions to each individual client, based upon the client’s abilities and needs.
